Osteopath, Andrew Hamilton joins Botesdale Health Centre ( posted on Dec 21, 2007 ) Osteopathy continues to gain recognition by the medical establishment, as Botesdale Health Centre enlists the help of long qualified osteopath Andrew Hamilton to work at the Orves Centre two afternoons a week. Andrew, who has practiced in Thetford since 1991, and is the principal of the Thetford Osteopaths practice has always thought it imperative to maintain good communications with the general practitioners for the sake of the patients, and feels that this exciting new development is part of a slowly increasing acceptance of certain modes of complementary medicine. He says "Many GPs have been referring patients to the Thetford Osteopaths practice for years because they have found that we have a great deal of success in treating low back pain. They tend to have a lot of confidence in the practice as we always try to tell them our findings and refer back any patients who we feel may require specialist medical intervention." Andrew is available for consultations on Monday and Thursday afternoons and appointments can be made by phoning the surgery directly on 01379 898 295. At the moment appointments are still on a private basis and cost £30 for a half hour session, but the ultimate goal is to be able to offer consultations on the NHS. "There are increasing numbers of studies that show that manipulative treatment such as Osteopathy is the Best Practice in some cases of simple mechanical back pain and we are lucky to have the services of such a well respected and experienced practitioner as Andrew" said Botesdale General Practitioner Andrew Yager. Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which concentrates on the mechanical functioning of the body and aims to remove pain caused by strains and muscular spasms caused when we move in an awkward way or try to lift something too heavy. The treatment consists of a combination of massage, manipulations and exercises and advice on how the pain can best be prevented in the future. All osteopaths have to complete a four year training in Anatomy, Pathology and many other medical subjects, and so are trained to spot the serious medical conditions which can present as back pain. The beneficial effects of osteopathic treatment can often be felt immediately; Andrew likens the feeling of being treated to " What your body would physically like to have done to it to relieve the pain."
